Timeline for Getting Ready to Go to College
|
|
Expert Advice provided by ScholarshipExperts.com.
So you're planning to go to college once you finish high school, right? But are you really ready? Planning for college is a two-year process. And unless a rich uncle is going to write that $30,000 check for you, it is going to involve acquiring and submitting financial aid forms, scholarship applications, and grant applications. But don't despair. By following the suggestions below, and by carefully monitoring the process, you should be buying college textbooks before you know it. Keep in mind, however, that this is a process; it isn't like taking one test and getting an A. It requires diligence, double-checking, and follow-up.

After 363 difficult days in 2007, my 16 month old son redeemed my opinion of this year on day 364. Like many toddlers, Eli relishes digging through drawers and cabinets on treasure hunts. Recently, one of his prizes was a translucent, blue camping bowl of mine (pictured below).
"Spaceman Spiff" (click to enlarge) | I watched him as he looked intently at his find: he held the bowl in his left hand in front of him and slowly moved his right hand alternatively below and above the blue plastic studying how it changed the appearance of his hand from the expected fleshy color to the electric blue. He then switched hands and repeated his experiment. Happy with the results, he pulled the bowl over his face and began to experience the world in blue.
He tottered around the kitchen enjoying his newly discovered perspective of the world. His parents' delight only encouraged him as he raced around squealing while looking like a pint-sized space traveller.
For his sense of exploration and enthusiasm (and blue face mask), I gave him the nickname "Spaceman Spiff" with apologies to the creator of Calvin and Hobbes comic strip. | My little spaceman reminded me via his blue mission that there is more than one way to look at things and to find joy in doing so. His fascination with his "blue" world made me pause long enough from all the stresses of my life and consider whether there was a "blue" way to look at my 2007. Thanks to Eli, I will look back on an otherwise stressful 2007 in cool blue and be at peace. Best wishes for you and your family in 2008!

Tough Words for School Board Considering Land Sale
|
|
Thought I'd share with you a tough editorial written by a former DeKalb Board of Education member recently in the AJC. He has some pretty harsh things to say about the current Board, including:
"It's time for our school board members to listen to the concerns of those who elected them instead of corporate hustlers with no vested interest in the long-term viability of our neighborhoods and neighborhood schools. The future of this community and whether it will remain a desirable place to live rests on the DeKalb school board's decision whether to sell or not to sell these public assets to Sembler."
You can read the entire editorial at the AJC.

Childcare needed in January 2008
|
|
MaryGeorge writes "Hi everyone. My husband, Trevor and I are due to have a baby in October. We will need childcare as of mid-January. I am on the waiting list for our work childcare, but am not likely to get in until May or so. I am also on the waiting list for Brookhaven United Methodist Church, but that doesn't look promising for our timeframe. Can you let me know of any nannies and/or daycares that you recommend, or anyone experienced in childcare who would be interested in caring for an infant full-time (M-F) for a few months? Thank you!"

Judge Stops Kittredge Lottery In Race Case
|
|
The sixth-grade lottery for Kittredge Magnet School has been
delayed while a federal court wrangles with a lawsuit accusing the
DeKalb County School System of reverse discrimination in Kittredge's
school selection process.
In an order handed down May 16, U.S. District Judge Richard Story
stopped the school system from conducting the May 24 lottery for sixth
grade until a formal opinion on the lawsuit is handed down.
Story also requested school records that DeKalb County had refused
to provide, saying that that the "defendants have failed to produce any
coherent explanation of the lottery process, either in the plaintiff's
discovery requests or at the preliminary injunction hearing before this
court."
