Editorial/Commentary: How Spaceman Spiff Saved My Year
Posted on Monday, December 31 2007 @ 01:04:58 CST by kim

Family Matters After 363 difficult days in 2007, my 16 month old son redeemed my opinion of this year on day 364. Like many toddlers, Eli relishes digging through drawers and cabinets on treasure hunts. Recently, one of his prizes was a translucent, blue camping bowl of mine (pictured below).

I watched him as he looked intently at his find: he held the bowl in his left hand in front of him and slowly moved his right hand alternatively below and above the blue plastic studying how it changed the appearance of his hand from the expected fleshy color to the electric blue. He then switched hands and repeated his experiment. Happy with the results, he pulled the bowl over his face and began to experience the world in blue.

He tottered around the kitchen enjoying his newly discovered perspective of the world. His parents' delight only encouraged him as he raced around squealing while looking like a pint-sized space traveller.

For his sense of exploration and enthusiasm (and blue face mask), I gave him the nickname "Spaceman Spiff" with apologies to the creator of Calvin and Hobbes comic strip.

My little spaceman reminded me via his blue mission that there is more than one way to look at things and to find joy in doing so. His fascination with his "blue" world made me pause long enough from all the stresses of my life and consider whether there was a "blue" way to look at my 2007.

Thanks to Eli, I will look back on an otherwise stressful 2007 in cool blue and be at peace. Best wishes for you and your family in 2008!
