Yep! It's Mail Fraud All Right!
One of the common complaints I get as a HNA volunteer is about all the commercial "mail" pieces attached to or stuffed into HillsDale mailboxes. Well, here's what you need to know about the relevant regulations ...
Postal regulations state under Domestic Mail Manual (DMM), section 508.3.1.3, "no part of a mail receptacle may be used to deliver any matter not bearing postage, including items or matter placed upon, supported by, attached to, hung from, or inserted into a mail receptacle. Any mailable matter not bearing postage and found as described above is subject to the same postage as would be paid if it were carried by mail."

July 15 - Procrastinator's Lifesaver by HNA
If, like me, you are working on a backlog of todos about 80 items long, you might not be ready for tomorrow's important vote in DeKalb County and around the State. Among other important selections, you will be responsible for choosing the next CEO of DeKalb County. If you are not aware of this fact, the CEO of DeKalb County has a role more akin to an elected dictator than anything else. With control of the Commission agenda, the budgetary process, the executive control of all operations of all major county departments, the CEO pretty much calls the shots. Also, there is an important Homestead Exemption referendum on this ballot tomorrow. So, even if you are late in meeting your responsibility to be informed, get ready with this HNA provided crash course of reference material ...
An Ballot "Wizard" by the DeKalb League of Women Voters published by the AJC.com - a great resource! You can have your hand held through the entire ballot in 20 minutes or less. The service allows you read briefs on election items, to make notes, and to make your choices - all of which you can print out to take with you to the Polls!
DeKalb League of Women Voters Ballot "Wizard"
A sample of the Democratic Ballot
A sample of the Republican Ballot
A sample of the non-partisan Ballot
No more excuse my fellow procrastinators - go vote! And don't forget to take a picture ID to comply with the new voting laws!

July Curb Appeal of the Month
Posted on behalf of Caroline Smithy: "I dropped by to see Roy and Susie Spear at 2003 Fairway Circle, our Curb Appeal of the Month winner. If you like to walk, isn’t it nice to come around the curve and see this yard? Spectacular in spring with the azaleas and dogwoods then gorgeous in June with hydrangeas and lilies. The Spears told me the lily bed was years in the making. Susie said they started a little patch with lilies from another yard then just kept dividing. Of course the heat, lack of rain and watering ban have shortened the season this year, not just for this yard but all of us. But what a colorful, wonderful show! Roy says that the lilies don’t care for hand watering too much. All the water gets on the leaves and evaporates without soaking the ground. As for the hydrangeas, he reminded me that they bloom on new growth, so be careful not to prune too late. There is a park-like quality to this yard."

No, there'll be no dunking machine at the next HNA meeting! But 11 HillsDalers showed up for the first ever HNA Dunkin' Donuts gathering.
Neighbors, including 3 families with small children, met at the Peachtree Road Dunkin' Donuts for coffee and donuts this past Saturday at 9am. The purpose was simply to meet with neighbors and share conversation. Of course, the kids and adults alike were happy to try something glazed or covered or filled!
HNA has started an alternating format for monthly meetings. HNA will continue to host official officer meetings that are open to all HillsDale homeowners and HNA members but on an every-other-month basis. So, July 8th, the business of the civic association will be the subject of the meeting. But once again in August on the 9th, we'll be back at Dunkin' Donuts for a less formal gathering.
Please make one or the other or both and stay in touch with your neighbors and community!

Wright Avenue-NDH-Roxboro Application Withdrawn
The land use and zoning applications for the development know as Overlook at Roxboro was withdrawn at the last County Commission meeting. I spoke with the developer briefly today and he indicated that his company intends to re-apply after some adjustments to the application.
I am not 100% sure but I believe this means that the new application will be sent through for the "full cycle" - meaning many weeks more of review and public comment. Look for an update by the end of June.

Wright Avenue-NDH-Roxboro Development Discussed
| Monday evening, May 19th, at 6:30pm approximately 30 or so area neighbors turned out for a public meeting on the subject of proposed development on Wright Avenue. The meeting was organized by Comm. Jeff Rader in efforts to understand the desire of the community surrounding the proposed site. Here is some background information: |
60 Unit Condo Proposal Deferred Again Planning Commissioners Recommend Denial of Condo Zoning Application
Related issues such as other planned developments in the area and potential traffic improvements were discussed. The overall concern expressed by all but one or two of the homeowners present was the desire to maintain the suburban character of the environment in our area. Specifically, those present from Devereaux Commons, HillsDale, and Pine Hills expressed an interest in maintaining land use at the site in support of single family, detached housing.

Sssh! Your Dog Should Not Know About City Dog Market
Once your dog finds out how good life can be at City Dog Market, they'll never be the same. Seriously, do you really want your dog to know about this retailer who offers the "ultimate in pet products and services?" Think about your answer carefully!
City Dog Market has opened its doors to the pawed public at 4244 Peachtree Road (next to Chevron). Brookhaven, Buckhead, Chamblee and Dunwoody will finally be served by an independent, quality pet products merchant. My wife and I at first thought it was going to be a cool hot dog cafe when we saw the sign. Though we were disappointed, our pooch Libby couldn't be more happy!
| The owners have created a wonderful place for dogs and dog lovers (cats, too!) - top quality merchandise carefully displayed in an open-feeling, market-style store. They have captured the love and playfulness of pets and their owners in their slogan, "Better Than a Belly Rub." But before I go on, let me tell you a bit about my dear dog, Libby ... | |

Bicycle Thefts Last Week On Fairway Circle
Last week someone entered the Davis' garage on Fairway Circle and made off with 2 adult bicycles. The theft appears to have been committed overnight Monday and was discovered on Tuesday by the owners. Combined with the breaking and entering of Anthony's and Christine's home down the street at the corner of Brookshire, this makes security violations at 2 HillsDale homes in less than a week.
Whenever you are the victim of a crime, please file a police report. Though there's little liklihood that filing a police report will ever lead to the recovery of your property, it will help the DKPD North Precinct assess where criminal activity is on the up-swing and will increase patrolling by the police in HillsDale.
